On a recent short trip to Brisbane I revisited this little gem of a patisserie in New Farm.  I found it when I visited Ponycat for brekky a couple of years ago and have been back a number of times to pick up some treats.  Chouquette makes fabulous pastries and is a little slice of France for the Francophiles out there.  Note: there are no pictures because we ate all the pastries!

Whenever I visit the line up is generally out the door which is always a good indication that it’s something worth waiting for.  There is limited seating inside and some bench seating outside.  During this visit I noticed that the bakery itself is in the adjoining shop so you can see Pastry Chefs at work with treats lined up ready to eat (drool).

Chouquette’s meal options are limited to savoury baguettes, however they are very good.  We enjoyed a Tetsuya Smoked Trout baguette with cream cheese, capers and dill ($9).  Traditional flavours with delicious smoked trout instead of salmon – yum!

We also purchased the must haves – a croissant, almond croissant and pan au chocolate.  They have mini pastries and full size options available.  On this occasion I was fortunate to try both (hence I’ve added a few Christmas kilos..), the texture and flavour reminded me of the pastries I enjoyed in Paris (sigh).  Flaky, delicate, buttery and super fresh.  Also, my sister is a big fan of brioche and highly rated the brioche she purchased (I’m not that much of a fan of brioche, I find it a bit boring unless it’s toasted and served with a spread or made into a bread and butter pudding… which, by the way, is delicious!).

Each time I visit Chouquette I’m served by someone who is French which adds to the experience.  The service is always efficient and friendly, and if you take away your items will be placed in lovely bags or boxes complete with little gold Chouquette stickers.

I didn’t sample the coffee on this occasion but I have to say there was a smell of burnt coffee in the air so I wasn’t overly keen to try it.  Anyway, the stars of the show are the baked goods and pastry items.

There is a fair bit of street parking nearby, and you can also park underneath.  As I said, I’ve visited Chouquette on a number of occasions in the past couple of years and the quality of the food is always high – I recommend a visit!
