I know I just said this, but I really love Vietnamese food. The fresh, summery flavours of mint, coriander and chilli. The balances of flavours, textures and colours (side note: but I still haven’t found a great Pho… Vietnam is very high on my foodie travel wish list).
And I’ve been wanting to try Jimmy Wah’s for some time. Those of you who know my blog, know we don’t get many chances for date night. That’s why I was so excited to order from them on Uber eats for Part 7 of my Take-in fest.
Before I go on, thank you to the lovely folks at Uber eats for inviting me to try so many of our local take-in options. It’s been a blast, with not one bad experience to date (phew!).
Jimmy Wah’s was no exception. From the super quick ordering using the app, to our door in 21 minutes flat. Boom! You don’t even get food that quickly when you dine in with some restaurants.
Let’s get straight into the food (like we did when it arrived). We ordered the Shakin beef – eye fillet, fermented black bean, black fungi, red onion, watercress ($38). The beef was tender and perfectly cooked (medium rare). I need to mention here that getting it perfectly cooked is a feat when you have the delivery timing to take into account. So cheers to you Chefs!
The sauce was salty and sweet, we could definitely taste the caramelly, earthy flavours of the fermented black bean. This paired really well with the sweet Spanish onion and earthy mushrooms. Loved the watercress and (I think?) chilli thread garnish.
Our favourite dish was the Cauliflower Fried Rice, charred tofu, quail egg, taro ($17). The rice was creamy, sweet, spicy and salty. A perfect blend. If you’re sharing like we were, I recommend asking for another quail egg. Also if you’re yet to try Cauliflower as a rice alternative, this is a great place to start.
We really enjoyed the two dishes we ordered, as small eaters the quantity was just about right. So our tip for big eaters is: order more than just these two dishes.
They nailed the flavours and we really enjoyed our dinner, so I recommend you give Jimmy Wah’s a try.
As for me, I want to go back and try some Vietnamese favourites: Bahn Mi, Rice paper rolls, Nuoc cham (crispy spring rolls) and of course, the Pho (confession: my mouth is watering just writing this).
